<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>This article presents the results of a comparative empirical study examining the implementation of a free-choice approach at English seminars at a university where English is taught as a non-major subject under conditions of AI integration. The study addresses the growing need to reconsider the highly-structured externally-regulated approach, which relies on predetermined tasks and strict instructional control, as many standard assignments can now be completed using AI tools without meaningful student engagement. The aim was to determine the comparative effectiveness of the free-choice and highly-structured externally-regulated approaches in fostering metacognitive skills and knowledge transfer in the context of AI use. Data were collected through classroom observation, questionnaires, content analysis of student work and reflective reports, and assessment of knowledge transfer. Then, they were analysed using comparative qualitative analysis with elements of quantification and examined statistically with the Mann–Whitney U test. The findings revealed statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups. The free-choice approach demonstrated stronger outcomes in learning motivation, reflective AI use, and metacognitive development compared to the highly-structured externally-regulated approach. This study contributes to the field by suggesting that the free-choice approach offers a viable direction for modernising university seminars in AIintegrated settings, particularly by fostering learning outcomes that extend beyond algorithmic performance and are therefore less susceptible to automation.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>высшее образование</kwd><kwd>ИИ-технологии</kwd><kwd>учебная мотивация</kwd><kwd>метакогнитивные навыки</kwd><kwd>перенос знаний</kwd><kwd>свободный выбор</kwd><kwd>жёсткое обусловливание</kwd><kwd>английский язык</kwd><kwd>неязыковой вуз</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>higher education</kwd><kwd>AI-technologies</kwd><kwd>learning motivation</kwd><kwd>metacognitive skills</kwd><kwd>knowledge transfer</kwd><kwd>free-choice approach</kwd><kwd>highly-structured externally-regulated approach</kwd><kwd>English language</kwd><kwd>non-language-major university</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Павлов И.
